The BankBox Study: Practicing Online Banking in a Simulated Environment

Are you an older adult who is interested in learning or improving your online banking skills? Join our study on supporting older adults to learn online banking!

This study will involve practicing online banking tasks in a risk-free web-based platform called BankBox using fake accounts and fake money. The platform has been developed by our team and offers two different ways of practicing: with and without guidance. The purpose of this study is to investigate practice as a mechanism for improving online banking self-efficacy and skill in older adults.

You are invited to participate in a research study about how older adults learn to use online banking platforms. The study explores different ways of practicing online banking in a safe environment using a prototype system called BankBox, which simulates real banking tasks like checking balances, paying bills, and transferring funds. BankBox is a research prototype web application hosted on a server at the University of Manitoba and study participants will access BankBox using a web browser like Chrome or Firefox. Participation in the study will consist of a single session lasting approximately 120 minutes, either online via Zoom or in-person at the University of Manitoba’s Fort Garry campus.

We are looking for individuals who meet the following criteria:

    • Are 65 years of age or older
    • Have an interest in learning or improving their online banking skills
    • Are comfortable using websites and email
    • Do banking through CIBC or Scotiabank. Participants from other banks are welcome if they are open to practicing with a simulated CIBC or Scotiabank interface

You do not need to currently bank online or with any specific bank, but participants must be open to using a simulated interface based on CIBC or Scotiabank.

For those who wish to participate in the study online, you will need:

    • A desktop or laptop computer (tablets or smartphones are not supported)
    • Either the Chrome or Firefox web browser
    • A stable internet connection
    • Comfort with using Zoom video conferencing software
    • Be willing to turn on camera and show ID to verify age 65+ (this requirement is to prevent scammers who are not older adults in Canada from trying to participate just for the money, a problem we have experienced in previous online studies)
    • Be willing to share your screen while using our BankBox web pages

During the session, you will complete a short survey, spend about 30 minutes practicing online banking tasks using the BankBox system, take part in two short interviews, and do a very short test of banking tasks on BankBox. BankBox has additional features such as providing guided instructions, hints, and feedback during practice. We are interested in learning which approach works best for helping older adults feel confident and capable when using online banking.

IMPORTANT: YOU WILL NOT BE ASKED TO SHARE ANY OF YOUR PRIVATE BANKING INFORMATION! We do not want to know about what accounts you have, or your passwords, or your balances. When you use our BankBox system, you will be able to practice banking transactions in a fake account that does not involve real money.

All sessions will be audio recorded, and your screen activity during the BankBox practice and testing will also be recorded and logged for analysis. If you are participating via Zoom, you will need to be able to share your screen with us. No names or identifying information will be shared publicly, and your privacy will be protected at all times.

As a token of appreciation for your time, you will receive $25 compensation. This will be provided through e-transfer or a Tim Hortons or McNally Robinson gift card sent to your email, depending on your preference. Participants who attend the session in person will also be provided with parking reimbursement.
