Investigating the Use of Trinkets for In-Class Active Learning in Computer Science

This research project will investigate how students enrolled in COMP 1020 experience the use of Java Trinkets as in-class active learning activities.

Investigators:
Dr. Celine Latulipe (celine.latulipe@umanitoba.ca)

Peter Vu (vuqh1@myumanitoba.ca)

You are invited to participate in an interview study about the student experience with using Trinkets for in-class active learning activities in introductory Computer Science courses. Specifically this study investigates how trinkets help with engagement and scaffold learning of new programming concepts. The aim of this study is to understand any issues with the use of Trinkets in such courses, and how to utilize them better in the future.

Participation in the study will consist of a single interview session lasting approximately 30 minutes. The study will take place online via Zoom, or in person in the EITC. We are only recruiting students who were enrolled in COMP 1020 during the summer 2024 semester under the instruction of Dr. Celine Latulipe or during the winter 2025 semester. Students who were registered after the Drop/Add date (even if they did a voluntary withdrawal from the course and did not complete it) are eligible. The two student research assistants (Devon Blewett and Lara De Leon) will conduct the interview and Dr. Latulipe will not know who participated, as the interview transcripts will be de-identified before they are shared with Dr. Latulipe. If you are eligible and choose to participate, the RAs will ask detailed questions about your experience using the Trinkets, what worked well, what could be improved, and whether and how you used the Trinkets outside of class. You will be asked to login to the Java Active Learning Workbook where the trinkets are and show the interviewers examples of your trinket usage and progress.

Risks associated with participating in this study are no greater than in everyday life. The indirect benefit of participation is that you get to contribute knowledge about how to best utilize trinkets for future CS students taking COMP 1020 and similar classes and you will also get a chance to reflect on your own learning process.

Participation in this study is voluntary. Participants will receive CAD$15 in e-transfer compensation for participating in the interview.

If you are interested and meet the above criteria, please follow the link below to the consent form. Once a completed consent form has been submitted, we will reach out to you (typically within 24-48 hours) to schedule an interview time and place.
